About Tommy

My story

I started playing piano when I started secondary school where I was encouraged by my music teacher whose infectious enthusiasm was an inspiration to me. We covered all sorts of music, but I was particularly drawn to the blues. I loved the improvisational and expressive nature of the music and started playing piano after school and whenever I got the chance. After this I learned guitar and began performing on both instruments in local venues in my home area around Broadstairs in Kent.

After I moved to London for University, I became involved in folk music. I loved its collaborative and supportive environment. The joy of group music making that I discovered through folk music has been influential on my music therapy practice, especially the belief that everyone is able to make music. During this time, I learned to play accordion, melodeon, tin whistle, banjo and ukulele.

I have been a teaching assistant for the past six years and currently work as with teenagers with learning difficulties.  In this work I have found a purpose and fulfilment which I had not previously experienced. I have taken every opportunity to play music and encourage the students to play, including running music clubs. I worked with a class of young refugees for several years. It was inspiring to see the impact music had on them, helping them learn English, strengthening friendships and bringing joyful experiences to their often difficult lives.

I trained as a music therapist at Nordoff and Robbins from 2024 to 2026.  I found the training course the most meaningful learning experience of my life. Music transformed from being a hobby to something I could use to help people. It deepened my understanding of what music can do and taught me how to listen to others in a more detailed and empathetic way. During my training I worked in a SEND school, a care home and a mental health hospital. This gave me the opportunity to play music with many incredible people and exposed me to variety of therapeutic scenarios.

I am now working as a Music Therapist, based in London.
